Fort Nepean

Located on the scenic Point Nepean, Fort Nepean has been standing since 1882 and was in service up until the end of World War II. During the war Fort Nepean fired its guns only twice in aggression and since then it has been sitting there for visitors to explore. The fort is surrounded by tonnes leading to several different areas including gun emplacements, ammunition stores and bunkers; the area also has a historic cemetery open to the public.

Visitors can follow a walking track through the national park passing various sites such as the iconic Cheviot Beach - the place where Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared in 1967 - The Rip and the dangerous divide located between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale. The walk begins at Gunners car park and finishes at Fort Nepean covering a distance of 3.5 kilometres. Walkers should allow a minimum of two hours to complete the walk and look around the fort to learn about its interesting history.
