Location

Sovereign Hill is a living museum presenting the story of Ballarat as a gold rush boomtown. Gold was discovered here in 1851, triggering the greatest alluvial gold rush the world has ever known. The sleepy pastoral settlement of Ballarat grew rapidly into a fine provincial city built on the wealth derived from its gold.

Covering 15 hectares of a former gold mining site, Sovereign Hill's Outdoor Museum brings the gold rush to life through a living township with over 18 scheduled activities happening throughout the day, you can find yourself panning for real gold, witness musket firing, see boiled lollies, wheels, and candles being made all before your very eyes.

The Outdoor Museum enjoys international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, working machinery, exhibits, and costumed interpreters.

It was such a fun day out with my family! We always have so much fun when we go. The staff are incredible and so good at their job, so entertaining when they are in character. There is just so much to do and see there and you learn so much. Can't wait to go back again.

We spent pretty much all day here and really enjoyed ourselves

We spent pretty much all day here and really enjoyed ourselves. We spent a bit extra and got a photo of our family dressed up and we looked amazing. The only thing we found a bit annoying is how much you pay for entry and then had to pay for tours and coach rides. We felt like entry should have been enough to cover all. Other than that we had a great day but didn’t get to the gold museum part so can’t say what that was like.

Very nice small town

Very nice small town, you could spend the whole in there. Family and children friendly place. The ticket is actually for 2 consecutive days, just so you have plenty of time to explore. The brochure also comes in different languages so you can still get to know the culture even if you’re a foreigner.

Quick

Quick, Straight forward, Intuitive and just works. We were able to purchase the tickets instantly from and iPhone and saved waiting in the long queue which would have taken up most of our day and also it was too hot to stand. Saved us all the trouble as it was a no frustration experience.

A very interesting place where all the staff within Sovereign Hill were dressed in the Victorian era

A very interesting place where all the staff within Sovereign Hill were dressed in the Victorian era. The highlight would be the gold panning. It is not easy trying to spot that glint of gold in your pan but help was at hand. There would be a guy who would show how it was done & he would be telling stories along the way too. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Ballarat. The only negative comment was that the entrance fee should cover the horse carriage ride around the township as the charge for the ride was not cheap. Though it's a bit expensive.

Wonderful experience and plenty to do

Wonderful experience and plenty to do. Great for the whole family. A whole day is needed so plan ahead and make sure you watch the gold pour. So interesting. Do the secret chamber mine tour first and red hill tour last. Would have done it another way round as scared the kids in the paid tour first from the darkness.

Purchased the tickets over the phone was the best and easiest way

Purchased the tickets over the phone was the best and easiest way. Excellent service and I will continue to purchase from Experience Oz. We are staying at the Ballarat Goldfields Big 4. They are so welcoming, gold coin donation for Pancake breakfast, wow great activities for the kids. So far we are blown away by the hospitality. We walked to Sovereign Hill quick and easiest way and we had a great time watching the activities. Great for the kids to learn about their history and pan for gold. Kids loved the lolly shop and bowling. Highly recommend.

We had a great family day at Sovereign Hill

We had a great family day at Sovereign Hill. We got to pan for gold, go for a ride on the horse and cart watch them pouring gold. We found the staff very friendly and extremely helpful. There is a lot to see and do. I wished we had stayed for two days, would definitely recommend a visit!

Fist time booking through Experience Oz

Fist time booking through Experience Oz, the booking process was easy to follow & tickets were easy to print. Entry at Sovereign Hill was simple with the pre-purchased tickets, kids had a ball and there was plenty to keep them entertained and involved in.
