On the second day, travel from Queenstown to the Mt Cook National Park - NZ's highest peak - and head through the rugged Kawarau River Gorge and into the high country landscape that New Zealand is famous for. Relax and enjoy a delicious three-course lunch (extra charge) while taking in the amazing views over the Mackenzie Basin before returning to Queenstown in the early evening.
Day 1
Take a scenic trip to Milford Sound and see the world-famous fiord in all its glory with a cruise on its immaculate waters.
from Queenstown, travel past placid Te Anau, along the Eglinton Valley and through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km underpass drilled through solid rock. Experience The Chasm, a short but thrilling walk over footbridges spanning powerful waterfalls and rapids.
Milford Sound, board your 1 3/4 hour scenic cruise and explore the length of the fiord. View glacier-scarred rock walls, lush native forest and waterfalls that tumble through valleys and crash into the sea below, as well as the dramatic profile of Mitre Peak, rising out of the fiord to a height of 1,692 metres above sea level.
After your cruise, return to Queenstown by coach.
Day 2
On your second day, embark on a day trip from Queenstown to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand's highest mountain.
Travel north, through the historic gold mining region of the rugged Kawarau River Gorge and past Cromwell, crossing the Lindis Pass and arriving at Omarama for morning tea (own expense).
We continue through the rugged high country landscape of the Mackenzie Basin to Mount Cook Village, where you can gaze up at the 3,754 metre-high mountain Aoraki / Mount Cook, an important landmark in Māori mythology.
Enjoy the views from the iconic Hermitage Hotel over a delicious three course lunch (optional extra). There is also the chance to take off on a scenic flight over snow-capped mountains and ancient glaciers (additional cost, weather permitting – this can be arranged with your driver/guide on the day).
