Location

Discover the remote areas outside of Queenstown with the Black Spur Full Day Canyon experience, an action-packed day filled with canyoning, natural waterslides, and much more! Kick off the day with a journey across Lake Wakatipu, one of New Zealand's most pristine lakes, before arriving in the World Heritage Area. Upon disembarkment, you will be greeted by the local farm animals including super friendly horses, sheep and cows. Next, follow your guide on a short hike up to the canyon entrance where you will see amazing views of the local mountains and lakes. The tour will stop here for a short snack and water break, and you can take in all the natural sights!

Next, your guide will give you a full safety briefing about the elements of canyoning before heading straight into the action. Take on the canyon with a 20-metre abseil before dipping and sliding along the waterslides. If you're feeling extra ambitious, there is an optional 8-metre jump waiting for you!

When you've finished exploring the canyon, head back to ground level and enjoy a picnic lunch!

If you're interested in exploring some of New Zealand's outdoor terrain, this is the perfect chance.

FAQs

Q. DO I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SWIM TO GO CANYONING?

  • All trips require a medium level of water confidence, as opposed to swimming ability. This may vary on the trip and the water levels in the canyon on the day. The half day Kawarau Canyon trip is more suitable for lower levels of water confidence. Please advise the frontline team before the trip if you are not confident in the water

Q. DO I NEED TO HAVE PREVIOUS CANYONING EXPERIENCE?

  • No!! Both our Kawarau and Black Spur canyons are ideal for people who are new to Canyoning. However if you do have experience and are looking for the next level the Mt Aspiring Canyon will test your courage.

Q. ARE THE JUMPS OPTIONAL?

  • Yes, if you really don't want to do any of the elements once you are in the canyon we can provide alternative options.

Q. CAN I WEAR MY GLASSES?

  • We don't recommend you wear glasses in the canyon. Contact lenses are better but can still fall out. If you only have glasses, ensure you have a sports strap or tie and let your guide know before departure. Glasses are worn at clients risk.

Q. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING ON A CANYONING TRIP?

  • All you need is your swimwear, a towel and a sense of adventure! We will provide all equipment including wetsuit socks and booties. With the colder weather recently we also recommend that you bring along non-cotton under layers for a bit of extra warmth. We recommend you do not bring any valuables. Secure lockers are available for storage.

Q. WILL I GET WET?

  • Yes! However, you will be wearing a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and wetsuit booties. Canyoning is a perfect rainy day activity as you're going to get wet anyway!

Q. CAN I TAKE MY CAMERA OR GO PRO?

  • Yes, but please make sure you have it attached to yourself somehow so you have the full use of your hands for safety reasons

Q. HOW LONG WILL I SPEND IN THE CANYON?

  • Each canyon varies due to clients abilities but a good guideline is Kawarau Half Day - 2 hours, Black Spur Full Day - 3 hours, Mt Aspiring Full Day - 4 hours

Q. DO I NEED TO BOOK A CANYONING EXPERIENCE IN ADVANCE?

  • Space can be limited, particularly in peak season so we highly recommend booking in advance.

Q. WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

  • We require 48 hours notice of cancellation in order to receive a full refund. But if for any reason we cancel a trip we provide a full refund.

Q. WHAT IS THE CANYONING SEASON?

  • Canyoning New Zealand operates trips between 1st October and 30th April.

Q. WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON A TRIP?

  • This is dependent on the number of guides available on the day.

Q. CAN MY FRIENDS/ FAMILY WATCH WHILE I GO CANYONING?

  • No, our canyons are not accessible to the public there is not an appropriate place for a spectator to watch safely.
